The Green TIC – Emprende contest, developed in the framework of the LIFE Green TIC Project –financed by the European Union- has mobilised more than 40 teams of young entrepreneurs and students that bring their talent, their ideas and their projects with the aim of promoting a more environmental friendly use of ICT and at the same time the use of ICT to foster the environment.

The teams that participated have developed 18 projects, 13 actions and have proposed 67 ideas for the contest.

The judges will communicate next 20th May the winners for the different categories, with prizes of 3000€ for the best project, 1500€ for the best action and 500€ for the best idea. An additional prize of 500€ will be given to the idea that receives more votes through the social network profiles of the project (LIFE Green TIC Facebook profile, more precisely). Finally, a raffle for a hot air balloon trip will take place the 20th of May among all the proposals.

The participants profile has been very varied, including secondary education students –of centres such as Compañía de María (La Enseñanza) from Valladolid and IES Batuecas from Salamanca-. Participating teams from universities included the University of Valladolid, the University San Jorge from Aragón and the University of Salamanca, with a special mention for the participation of the Computing Group of the University of Valladolid.

Several entrepreneurs’ teams participated as well coming from Madrid and Valladolid, including the employment shuttle (lanzadera de empleo) of Valladolid.

Among the participating projects, 8 were games or environmental education interactives devoted to themes such as recycling, nature conservation, pollution prevention, etc. Furthermore, websites and carbon footprint calculators or other tools for sustainable mobility or lightning control have been presented, including a project which develops a system for drones to study air quality.

Among the participating actions, most of them consist on environmental education campaigns for school students on the environmental impacts of ICT and on how to reduce their energy consumption but also several campaigns to inform companies on the economic and environmental benefits of Green ICT devices used within the company. A blog and a website have also been presented to share knowledge and good practices on responsible environmental performance or on carbon footprint.

The short-listed participants will participate in a final event where they will be invited to explain their proposals to companies of the ICT and environmental sectors, looking for a future development of the ideas and the expert advice or the partnership of the interested companies.
